Why would you trust me?

Posted by Cathy Meder on Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 at 8:47pm.

I want to be your Realtor®; thought I’d just make that clear. I want to list and market your home when you want to sell it—we’ll get it done, even in the current market. If you are a buyer, whether from in town or out of town, I want to be your agent. I’m a woman, I’m a multi-tasker, I can do it all, so yes, I work with both buyers and with sellers. :)

I put myself in your shoes the other day and asked myself, “ Why would you trust me? ” Many of you don’t know me, most of you have never met me or even talked to me on the phone, so why would you? Trust is sometimes earned and sometimes given and it is such a fragile thing, isn’t it?

Most business comes to real estate agents through referrals. That makes complete sense because you know someone you already trust and they tell you about the Realtor® they used or heard about and you make the transfer of their trust to yourself. That really is the best way to find your real estate agent, so, let me refer myself to you by telling some of my real estate agent stories.

In 1991, already eight years into my career, I hired a company to develop marketing/branding materials. They produced a pamphlet for me with a slogan that stated, “Cathy Meder – Someone you can trust!” They created this slogan because I told them the intent of my heart was to, first, do what was best for my clients. And, that is exactly what I’ve done my entire career. (I had to dig around in my basement to find one of those old pamphlets. I may reproduce its content on another page or blog for you.)

I had a client who told me about an agent they had previously hired because he thought the agent sounded tough. My client thought the agent would really play hard ball on their behalf when it came time to negotiate for his new home.  Without telling the whole story and not saying anything negative about the other agent—let’s just say when it came time to sell the house, who do you think they called—that agent or ME? You got it—ME!

I don’t want to just sell you because I can sell you. Many agents will do just that and you usually don’t find out about it until you are deep in the process after finding the home you want; I refuse to do that to you. I believe there is an intended place for every one of us to live. I consider finding that perfect home for you a personal responsibility and I never want you to live in the wrong place. You will have the most positive impact you can have on your family, community and business when you and your family are living in the right home.

I took John out recently to show him homes he was interested in buying. After showing him just a few homes in the city he wanted he thought he was ready to make an offer. He’s a first time buyer and he seemed a little hesitant. He had only looked at a relatively few homes so I asked him if he would like to look at more homes to get a better feel for the area and strongly suggested to him that we keep looking. I wanted him to be sure that he had found the place that was right for him. We kept looking, at my urging, and found the perfect place for him that was closer to his work. Of course it would have, initially, benefited me if he had bought the first place he looked at, (without looking further) because my time is saved, my gas bill is lower, I could be doing other things, etc. But that is only the initial affect, because, as in the example above, my friend did remember his “tough” agent when he was ready to sell his home and buy another. He remembered he didn’t want to use him again, so he called me.

I am different, and, I am intentional about my former clients remembering me the right way. I am a tough negotiator with the other team but not with you. I completely represent you when it comes time to negotiate for the home you have chosen.

Yes, I know a Realtor® you should use as your agent! I am referring myself to you based on my own story, based on my 28 years of experience and professional service to thousands of people, based on all the fans I have in our community and based on my previous history that I will treat you just like family – just like I want to be treated. I hope to hear from you soon!
